AMD outlines future processors to compete with Atom

AMD LOGOAMD announced several new projects that will compete with Intel’s Atom processor late next year, according to ExtremeTech. The company expects to add the Caspian and Conesus processors sometime next year. Both products are intended for use in mini-notebooks or netbooks, featuring the same 45-nm architecture of the new Shanghai processor announced earlier this week. Dual-cores will be featured in both, along with DDR-2 memory support. (more…)

Intel gains processor market share in Q3

Intel gained market share in the global microprocessor segment for the third quarter of 2008, comparing year-over-year numbers, according to iSuppli analysis. The company grew 1.7 percent from last year and .3 percent from the previous quarter this year. In contrast, AMD has been losing market share at a similar rate of 1.8 percent from 2007. The research covered the whole range of microprocessors including x86, RISC, and other general purpose products. (more…)

Intel’s upcoming Core i7 pushed to 4GHz on air

IntelIntel’s upcoming Core i7 chips won’t disappoint in the overclocking department, that’s for sure. A screenshot shows 4.11 GHz speeds on air, with a minor voltage bump.

We have already told you that Nehalem is highly overclockable and today we have a screenshot of a successful overclock on a Bloomfield, Core i7 CPU.

AMD to go fab-less within two weeks, says analyst

AMD LOGOAMD may spin-off two of its fabrication plants in Dresden, Germany within two weeks, according to a Wall Street securities analyst. Details on the “asset smart” plan here.

AMD has talked vaguely about a manufacturing spin-off for more than a year now. Company chairman Hector Ruiz told analysts in July that he hopes to complete a deal before the end of 2008. Ruiz stepped down as CEO and was instructed by his board to concentrate his efforts on completing the deal.
