Developer Releases Tethering App For Android

Given the high cost of air cards, laptop users everywhere are turning to tethering applications in order to take advantage of the internet connections provided by their mobile phones. Although many mobile operators don’t support tethering, ingenious developers have found ways to get around those restrictions. Thanks to their efforts, we now have tools like PdaNet, a tethering application for Palm, Windows Mobile, and iPhone. But what about the newly released Android phone? Can it be tethered, too? Google Walks Away from Yahoo Advertising Deal

After it became clear that the Department of Justice would try to block the Google-Yahoo advertising deal, Google today announced that it has decided to walk away from the deal. Google was clearly not interested in a protracted legal battle that would potentially alienate its partners. In its own press release, Yahoo points out that the deal was only ‘incremental’ to its product roadmap, though Yahoo did not discuss the potential financial fallout from this announcement. Android G1 gets its game on with AndroidBoy

Last week the Androidboy GameBoy emulator package was released into the Android Market for download to T-Mobile G1. The Androidboy emulator is a fork of the JavaGB open source mobile GameBoy emulation project. Nokia rolls out 5130 XpressMusic, 6 budget phones

Nokia on Tuesday shifted focus to the budget realm with seven new phones that include its lowest-cost music phone yet. The 5130 XpressMusic (shown at top) is the top-end phone among the introductions but the company’s lowest-cost true media phone. At 90 Euros ($113) without discounts, the phone still carries a two-megapixel camera, a full-size headphone jack, FM radio and dedicated music controls. It supports microSD for storage and comes pre-supplied with a 1GB card of its own at its price. Black-and-blue as well as black-and-red versions should ship in early 2009. Read more →

WD reveals TV media hub with 1080p output

Western Digital on Monday took its own turn at media hubs by introducing the HD TV Media Player. In place of using a network connection, the company is taking advantage of its skill with external storage to let users locally transfer content: users can attach up to two USB hard drives, certain portable media players or other devices (including the company’s MyBook drives) and browse the contents of the drive with an on-screen menu and a bundled remote. Navigon launches 5100 max and 2090S GPS navigators

Navigon on Wednesday announced the release of the 5100 max personal navigation devices, spotted earlier this month at the FCC, along with the 2090S. Both units sport Navigon’s newest software that can generate routes quicker and makes entering information faster and easier thanks to the company’s SmartSpeller software. The 5100 max uses a 4.3-inch touchscreen display with a 16:9 aspect ratio that will display real-time traffic updates. Buyers get these updates for the life of the unit without having to pay any additional subscription fees or having to buy additional hardware. Read more →
