Pure Digital today launched its response to a recent wave of ultra-simple HD camcorders from newer rivals with the launch of the Flip Mino HD. The camera matches the 720p widescreen, fixed zoom capture of most of its opponents but opts for a built-in 4GB of flash memory rather than the SD cards of others. This gives it an hour of storage for HD out of the box in the Mino HD’s native MPEG-4 format, which also makes most videos relatively portable both to web video and to video editing tools, including iMovie. Sony today said it has broken a new barrier in cellphone cameras through an update to its Exmor sensors. The company has shrunk the pixel size to 1.4µm and now says it can produce a 12.25-megapixel, 28mm equivalent CMOS camera small enough to fit in some cellphones. The unit gives a cellphone the image quality and detail of a modern point-and-shoot camera, according to the company. Read more →

The Wi-Fi Protected Access (WPA) encryption standard has been partially cracked by security researchers Erik Tews and Martin Beck, according to a Thursday report. The pair will demonstrate and discuss their accomplishment at the PacSec conference in Tokyo next week. The attack allows the hacker to read data sent from the router to a laptop computer and send inaccurate information to connected clients. Beck has reportedly found a way to break the crack the Temporal Key Integrity Protocol (TKIP) key used by the WPA standard in about less than 15 minutes, which is the shortest amount of time such an attack can be performed to date. Google today launched the surprise addition of Gmail video chat to its webmail interface. The feature lets contacts use Google Talk to start a two-way video or audio-only conversation with anyone currently online and can be started in the middle of a text chat. Microsoft at its TechEd conference has confirmed the impending launch of Internet Explorer Mobile 6, the next major version of its cellphone browser. Originally announced in February, the significantly delayed update is available to test in emulator form and has also detailed all the major changes due with the web suite. The software aims to resolve many of the often-criticized features of the legacy browser from Windows Mobile 6 and starts with an accurate HTML renderer that displays websites the way they would appear on a desktop.
