BlackBerry Pearl Flip hits Rogers with TalkSpot hook

Rogers today became the second North American carrier to pick up the BlackBerry Pearl Flip. The clamshell carries the same updated BlackBerry OS, two-megapixel camera and EDGE data of the stock Flip but takes advantage of its built-in Wi-Fi for Rogers’ TalkSpot calling service, which like T-Mobile’s HotSpot@Home bridges calls between GSM and Wi-Fi to save on calling time or to improve reception indoors. As always, the short-range wireless also serves as a faster alternative to EDGE for data. (more…)

Some HSPA, Wi-Fi forced out of Storm by Verizon?

Verizon’s edition of the BlackBerry Storm was intentionally stripped of 3G and Wi-Fi features, according to a claim by “top-level” sources for BGR. Although it would have technically been possible to include tri-band HSPA 3G to allow true world roaming, the American carrier has reportedly had all HSPA frequency support pulled save for its partner Vodafone’s 2,100MHz band to discourage buyers from unlocking the phone and using it with AT&T or other carriers. BlackBerry Curve 8900 slips on T-Mobile Germany site

The BlackBerry Curve 8900, previously known as the Javelin, has surfaced today through a product page posted at T-Mobile Germany ahead of any official launch. Its product page confirms features that have been widely rumored for the device, which should drop the Bold’s 3G but carry the same GPS, Wi-Fi and 480×360 display. A relatively large 1,400mAh battery is onboard but should give the phone just four hours of battery life.

T-Mobile doesn’t supply pricing for the 8900 but lists the device as shipping in November for its German subscribers. North American carriers are certain to get the new Curve, though whether this will appear at the same time is still an unknown. T-Mobile USA was one of the earliest adopters of the Wi-Fi-equipped Curve 8320 and has commonly been regarded as a likely candidate for the Curve’s replacement.

BlackBerry Storm gets copy/paste, app store

RIM’s BlackBerry Storm will try to better the interface of the iPhone as well as emulate it, a pair of leaks show. A BGR scoop shows that the cellphone maker’s first touch device will still include a copy-and-paste function despite the absence of typical controls; a multi-touch input lets users tap the ends of text to highlight the relevant sections; users can then refine where the text starts and copy it to paste it later.
