Google launches Gmail audio, video chat

Google today launched the surprise addition of Gmail video chat to its webmail interface. The feature lets contacts use Google Talk to start a two-way video or audio-only conversation with anyone currently online and can be started in the middle of a text chat. Like dedicated desktop apps, the web version carries a picture-in-picture view and can be stretched out or made full-screen. (more…)

Ballmer calls Google’s Android ‘way behind’

Microsoft chief executive Steve Ballmer on Thursday dismissed Google’s Android operating system, saying he believed it was financially unsound.

Speaking at Telstra’s annual investment day, Ballmer said that Android was Google’s first phone operating system and that designing one wasn’t easy. “They can hire smart guys, hire a lot of people, blah dee blah dee blah, but you know they start out way behind in a certain sense,” he said. (more…)

Google Walks Away from Yahoo Advertising Deal

After it became clear that the Department of Justice would try to block the Google-Yahoo advertising deal, Google today announced that it has decided to walk away from the deal. Google was clearly not interested in a protracted legal battle that would potentially alienate its partners. In its own press release, Yahoo points out that the deal was only ‘incremental’ to its product roadmap, though Yahoo did not discuss the potential financial fallout from this announcement. (more…)

G1 coming to the UK on October 30th.

T-Mobile has announced that they’re bringing the first Android handset to the United Kingdom on October 30th., a few short days after it’s due to land in the U.S. Earlier rumours were pointing to November, but it’s good to see T-Mobile being a little more optimistic. It’ll be available for free (!) on a £40 monthly contract in white and black; sorry if you were holding out for the brown. Hell, at that price, who can complain about colour? (more…)

Microsoft fears Chrome’s JavaScript performance more than Flash

A Microsoft spokesperson recently talked about the introduction of Google’s Chrome browser, and apparently it has them at least somewhat concerned. Microsoft’s Scott Hanselman said that Silverlight could face a serious threat from Chrome (and Firefox), if Google and Mozilla continue to improve the execution speed and efficiency of JavaScript. According to him, a “100 to 1,000 fold” increase in JavaScript speed could be expected from the two rival browsers, which would turn it a better choice for numerous web-based applications.

Google says, “We’ve Fixed AdSense Reports”, Publishers Disagree!

We had informed our users yesterday, that there were numerous reports of delays in Google AdWords and Google AdSense reports which was leading to incorrect data. However, now Google says, that it has fixed the issue.

In a post on Google Groups, Stephanie explains, “Hi everyone, This reporting issue has now been fixed, so you should now see all of your missing data from yesterday in your account. (We’ve also reflected this update on our Known Issues page at https://www.google.com/adsense/support/bin/answer.py?answer=92365. I’ll leave this thread pinned to the top of this category for another day, to make sure more forum members see this update.
