Microsoft launches iPhone app

In a somewhat bizarre turn of events, Microsoft has released its first application for Apple’s iPhone – and it’s not available on its own Windows Mobile platform.

CNet spotted the release of Seadragon Mobile by Microsoft’s Live Labs on Sunday. Designed as a lightweight, mobile implementation of the Seadragon technology which powers the Photosynth 3D photo gallery system, the free application – available from Apple’s App Store – allows images stored on the Internet or on the Photosynth service to be quickly browsed via a 3D accelerated ‘deep-zoom’ system which allows the viewing of images far larger than the iPhone can handle alone. Logic3 launches i-Station25 iPhone, iPod speakers

The UK’s Logic3 has recently launched its i-Station25 portable speakers meant to work with Apple’s iPhone and iPod touch. The i-Station 25 includes an accelerometer that will adjust the output of the speakers to output at the correct left and right separation when users turn it 90 degrees to better view photos or videos stored on their connected Apple device. The four built-in speakers deliver a total of 8W RMS of power, and each is sized at nearly 1.6 inches. The buzzing noise heard in speakers right before an incoming call is suppressed with the use of TDMA noise distortion circuitry. (more…)

Apple sued again for iPhone 3G network woes, iPhone 3G case cracks

The iPhone 3G isn’t just a media magnet, it’s also a lawsuit magnet. Apple has been hit with more lawsuits regarding its market-smashing iPhone 3G than has any other smartphone manufacturer on the planet. The latest lawsuit against the Cupertino-based Apple cites the iPhone 3G’s failure to live up to Apple’s claims that the iPhone 3G is “twice as fast” as the original iPhone. This time around, the lawsuit also cites that Apple is ignoring reports of users finding cracks in their iPhone 3G casing. (more…)

Dash halts hardware, may make iPhone GPS app

Dash Navigation announced on Monday that it will cease making it Dash Express GPS navigation devices for cars that include Web 2.0 services as part of a bigger company move to change its business model from a consumer-focused one to a business-to-business orientation. The company will instead sell licenses for use of its platform to other makers of automobile on-board navigation systems, smartphones and mobile Internet devices (MIDs), among other electronics. Earlier this summer, the company halved prices of its navigation units, which the company launched started selling near the beginning of the year for about $600. (more…)

Alltel tries iPhone rivalry with Samsung Delve

Alltel on Thursday became the last major US carrier to take its turn at a full touchscreen cellphone with the Samsung Delve. The handset has some of the styling cues of the Instinct for Sprint but uses non-touch call and menu buttons. Importantly, it also stands as the first American phone to carry Samsung’s TouchWiz interface, which lets users add software widgets to the phone’s home screen for quicker access to apps or surface-level information. The Delve goes without a smartphone operating system like other high-end devices such as the Omnia, however. (more…)
