Nokia rolls out 5130 XpressMusic, 6 budget phones

Nokia on Tuesday shifted focus to the budget realm with seven new phones that include its lowest-cost music phone yet. The 5130 XpressMusic (shown at top) is the top-end phone among the introductions but the company’s lowest-cost true media phone. At 90 Euros ($113) without discounts, the phone still carries a two-megapixel camera, a full-size headphone jack, FM radio and dedicated music controls. It supports microSD for storage and comes pre-supplied with a 1GB card of its own at its price. Black-and-blue as well as black-and-red versions should ship in early 2009. (more…)

Nokia working on OLED, NFC-ready tablet?

Nokia could be developing a new, much larger portable device that sits above its Internet Tablets in features, a new research note by UBS analyst Maynard Um says. Where the existing N810 has just a 4.1-inch display, investigations by Um point to the existence of either a notebook or tablet with a 9- or 10-inch display and features that have never existed on an Nseries tablet, such as a touchpad for input, HDMI out, a secondary OLED screen and Near Field Communication (NFC) for very close-range wireless links. Nokia intros Home Control Center platform

World’s-largest cellphone maker Nokia on Thursday announced it is developing the Nokia Home Control Center, a platform that will allow users to control their home electronics, security systems and energy management systems via a mobile device. It’s an open platform that will allow third parties to write their own smart home solutions for use in mobile devices or PCs and control all compatible devices in their home either locally or remotely. Nokia teases handset with gesture-driven UI

Nokia reportedly unveiled this advertisement for an unnamed, next-generation handset at a Capital Markets Day presentation in Brooklyn on Thursday. Little is known about the cellphone other than what the photo reveals, which is a touchscreen that covers nearly the entire face of the handset with no hard buttons visible. The cellphone breaks from Nokia tradition as it forgoes the use of any form of a conventional keypad or keyboard and instead relies nearly entirely on what the phone maker calls a Direct UI interface. Nokia 5800 sees limited shipping

Nokia today said it has started the first wave of shipments of the 5800 XpressMusic, its first touchscreen phone. The Symbian S60 device is already on sale or should be soon for the few regions receiving it before the end of the year, including Nokia’s home country of Finland as well as Hong Kong, India, Russia, Spain and the Taiwan area. The company positions it as a near-smartphone with support for full apps, 3G, GPS and Wi-Fi but also a media-centric interface with an always-present media bar for navigating tracks, a 3.2-megapixel camera with video capture and a particularly sharp 640×360, 3.2-inch display.
